CANADIAN POLITICAL ROUNDUP - EVES, PESCHISOLIDO AND BENNETT
TORONTO, January 28, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Conflict of interest charges are again surrounding former Ontario Finance Minister and current Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Ernie Eves. Ontario Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty says Eves was in a conflict-of-interest position when as Finance Minister his ministry ignored warnings that an enriched pension scheme for MPPs likely would break federal law. "Mr. Eves had hundreds of thousands of personal dollars at stake," said Mr. McGuinty. The Globe and Mail reports Eves was among those MPPs who received the larger payouts when the government ended the old pension plan;. Eves received $810,000.

OTTAWA, January 28, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Joe Peschisolido, an MP from Richmond B.C., has crossed party lines leaving the Canadian Alliance to join the Liberals. The move came as a severe shock to his riding which had heavily voted against the Liberal party according to the Alliance riding vice-president. Peschisolido, described by insiders as opportunistic, made a shallow claim to being perturbed about a racist comment as the reason for his defection.

OTTAWA, January 28, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Prime Minister Jean Chretien is reported to have lashed out severely at fellow Liberal MP Carolyn Bennett for having publicly criticized the latest cabinet shuffle. Bennett, an strong pro-abortion feminist, had complained that there were not enough women given cabinet posts. In a lesson that could be applied to former Alliance dissidents, Chretien reportedly thundered at a caucus meeting: "You bring your laundry in here, you don't air it outside." The Liberals, very skilled at politics, are keenly sensitive to political damage that occurs when party members air divisions in public.
