WASHINGTON SUPREME COURT ORDERS DEATH OF HUMAN EMBRYOS AGAINST MOTHER'S WILL
IVF is often used, as is abortion, as a means to dominate women
OLYMPIA, June 14, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The Washington Supreme Court ordered the death of two human embryos yesterday. The embryos, now frozen, were created under contract by David and Becky Litowitz who are in the midst of a messy divorce.
The unborn children are the product of Mr. Litowitz's sperm and donor ova. Mrs. Litowitz requested they be carried by a surrogate and she be allowed to raise the children, however, her estranged husband argued he did not wish to have more children with her.
The court attempted to excuse itself from the death sentence it issued by referring to the contract with the fertility clinic which stipulated that the embryos would be kept frozen only five years unless the couple extended the contract. However, Mrs. Litowitz's attorney pointed out that the contract would allow extension if payment was made and that her client has already paid and was willing to sustain their care.
The story reveals that IVF is often used, as is abortion, as a means to dominate women. AP reports that "Three similar cases in New York, Massachusetts and Tennessee all dealt with estranged couples that both had biological links to the embryos. In all three cases, the men wanted the embryos destroyed and the women wanted them brought to life. Courts ruled in favor of the men."
