SWEDISH SPERM DONOR FORCED TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT TO LESBIAN RECIPIENT

STOCKHOLM, June 21, 2001 (LSN.ca) - A 36-year-old Swedish sperm donor, Igor Lehnberg, lost an appeal this week against a court order to pay child support for three sons conceived with his donation(s) to a lesbian couple for artificial insemination, a court official said yesterday.

Lehnberg flaunted the usual Swedish sperm donor practice of remaining anonymous, insisting that the children had a right to know who their "father" was.

The lesbian couple has since broken up, but the capital city's social services office wanted Lehnberg to pay $265 per month in child support to the woman who bore three boys now aged 10, eight and six -- having admitted to being their biological father.

Lehnberg appealed the order because under Swedish law a sperm donor is not regarded as the legal parent, emphasizing that he had not had sexual intercourse with the mother, a practising lesbian. However, these arguments fell on stony ground.
