Witmer and Clement Being Courted but not Flaherty and Stockwell

TORONTO, March 12, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The National Post reported that the Ernie Eves Ontario PC leadership team now realizes their candidate cannot win on the first ballot and may lose on a second ballot vote to Jim Flaherty.

Eves, who is the most well-connected candidate to Bay St. big money, is rumored to be secretly offering generous financial enticements to Witmer and Clement, in addition to promises of significant cabinet postings. The Post reports that John Lashinger, chairman of the Eves campaign, denied the claim.

Given the new one person, one vote election process, the attempts to sway votes by making deals with other candidates are unlikely to be as successful as past more easily manipulated and far less democratic political party election rules.
