CANADIAN ALLIANCE DISSIDENTS CONSIDER JOINING FEDERAL TORY PARTY

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OTTAWA, March 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - In a report which came as a shock to many social conservatives in Canada, the National Post reveals today that the Democratic Representative Caucus, the group of seven dissident Alliance MPs, is considering joining the Progressive Conservative Party. This would be under current PC Leader and red Tory Joe Clark, who has indicated his intention to remain the Leader and who is adamantly opposed to social conservatism.

Clark, who is fond of leading Gay Pride parades, has not only indicated that he is personally in favour of abortion, he also has shown himself an activist in this regard. He has refused the possibility of a referendum on the issue and has mandated that any union between the Alliance and Tories must favour his position on social issues.

At a campaign rally in November 2000, after saying that he unequivocally supports a "woman's right to choose", Clark said, "It is simply unacceptable that there should be a suggestion that . . . 500,000 men in the country could force a referendum on a woman's right to choose." Then in March 2001, after being blasted by his Calgary Bishop Fred Henry as "scandalous" for being "pro-choice" while claiming to be a Catholic, Clark mandated that any new form of co-operation between the Tories and Alliance must espouse "socially progressive" policies.

DRC leader and social conservative Chuck Strahl admitted that discussions of moving to the Tories were on and he was initiating them. Another DRC MP, Val Meredith, admitted she was considering joining the Tories. Strahl also admitted that he was urged to have the group join the Tories in the midst of the Alliance leadership to inflict political damage on the Alliance.

THATCHER WARNS BRITAIN TO STOP ENCROACHMENT BY EUROPEAN UNION

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

LONDON, March 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in her new book Statecraft, calls for Britain to renegotiate its terms of membership in the European Union to leave it more control over its internal affairs. She urges the national government to regain control over agricultural, fishing, security and trade policy, which commentators suggest is tantamount to calling for a complete withdrawal from the EU.

Lady Thatcher does not back away from the suggestion of quitting the EU. "It is frequently said to be unthinkable that Britain should leave the European Union. But the avoidance of thought about this is a poor substitute for judgment," she writes.

Considering the loss of a sense of decency and a capitulation on morality originated in Europe, Thatcher's comments on Europe are of particular interest. "During my lifetime most of the problems the world has faced have come, in one fashion or another, from mainland Europe, and the solutions from outside it," she writes. "That generalisation is clearly true of the Second World War. Nazism was, after all, a European ideology, the Third Reich an attempt at European domination."

UK STUDY FINDS SEX ED AND MORNING AFTER PILLS ENCOURAGE PROMISCUITY

More abortions follow increased use of morning after pill

LONDON, March 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Dr David Paton, a leading expert on teenage fertility at the University of Nottingham, has released a study suggesting that candid sex education and the availability of the morning after pill have increased promiscuous sex. The study confirms the findings of studies conducted in 1999 and 2000 which found that use of family planning information did not lead to a decrease in unwanted pregnancies, and that found that young people who were prescribed the morning-after pill were much more likely to have abortions.

The current study examined figures from the Office of National Statistics for 2000 showing that 4,382 girls under the age of 16 had abortions, up 200 on the year before and up 20% since 1992, during the last Conservative Government. The current Government's policy of looking to decrease teen pregnancy with sex ed and availability of the morning after pill "is a failed policy, looking at all the available evidence," Paton said.

"It is clear that providing more family planning clinics, far from having the effect of reducing conception rates, has actually led to an increase," he said. "The availability of the morning-after pill seems to be encouraging risky behaviour. It appears that if people have access to family planning advice they think they automatically have a lower risk of pregnancy."

Dr. Paton explained the failed reasoning of the Government's current policy. "Basically, you are sending out mixed messages. On the one hand, sex under the age of 16 is illegal; on the other, you are giving information which says, 'Well, if you are going to do it, here's how you go about it'."

HAWAII HOUSE PASSES LEGISLATION PROMOTING MORNING AFTER PILLS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

HONOLULU, March 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Only a week after approving a bill to allow assisted suicide, the Hawaii House has passed two bills promoting the abortifacient morning after pill. The first of the bills allows pharmacists to dispense the abortifacients without a doctor's prescription to women over 18 years of age. The second bill forces hospitals and primary-care clinics, including religiously-affiliated ones to make the abortifacients available to women who have been sexually assaulted.

The bills now move to the Senate for consideration.

MARY ROBINSON RESIGNS FROM UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

UNITED NATIONS, Mar 20, 2001 (LSN.ca) - UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, the former president of Ireland said she would resign from her position at the UN. Last March Robinson announced that she would step down but reversed her decision a couple of weeks later asking for her term to be extended for one year.

Over her tenure at the UN, Robinson has been one of the most outspoken proponents of homosexuality and abortion under the guise of protection from discrimination based on "sexual orientation" and "reproductive rights." The International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA), was accorded special recognition by Robinson. In October 1998 ILGA met with Robinson in Geneva to discuss the advancement of lesbian and gay rights as human rights. According to an ILGA report on the meeting, Robinson appointed a liaison person in her office for ILGA to maintain stronger links and requested that ILGA supply material to help in the training of lesbian and gay awareness for all UN employees and working groups.

ARCHBISHOP OF NEW ORLEANS OPPOSES SPEAKER FROM NATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF WOMEN

NEW ORLEANS, March 18, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Archbishop Alfred Hughes of New Orleans has come out publicly against the proposed speaking engagement of the president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) at a local Catholic university. NOW president Kim Gandy was scheduled to speak at Loyola University Wednesday, after having been invited by the university's law school.

The Archbishop explained his opposition to Gandy was due to NOW's "pro-abortion agenda." Moreover, the archbishop pointed out that Gandy, a Loyola alumna is pro-abortion. "Her beliefs are contrary to the clear and unambiguous teachings of the Catholic Church," he said.

While university officials would not comment on the matter Friday, Archbishop Hughes said he is holding meetings with the Rev. Bernard Knoth, president of Loyola, on the matter.

UK REPORTS HUGE RISE IN BABIES BORN WITH DEFECTS
The Birth Defects Foundation (BDF) calculates that 45,000 babies are born each year with defects ranging from spina bifida - an abnormality of the spine - to prominent birthmarks or minor malformations of the hands or feet. The total is six times higher than the Government's own figures for neonatal abnormalities and amounts to one in 16 of all births. However, the Office of National Statistics admits its own figures do not reflect the scale of the problem.
