POLL SHOWS MAJORITY IN CHILE FAVOUR ABORTION, DIVORCE

SANTIAGO, May 27, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A poll released Saturday in Chile reports that 80% of the population supports legalizing divorce and 57% favour legalized abortion. The poll, which was conducted by the Latin American College of Social Sciences (FLACSO) Oct. 13-25 among 40,000 people drawn from 29 cities, has a 4.5 percent margin of error.
The socialist Chilean government has long planned to legalize divorce. Despite the fact that abortion is illegal, the government allowed an abortifacient morning after pill to be distributed in the country. After the Supreme Court ruled against allowing the distribution of the particular pill, the government approved another version of the morning-after pill for distribution. When contested, the government action was upheld by the Appeals Court but is being appealed to the Supreme Court.
