AUSTRALIA TO LEGALIZE RESEARCH ON EMBRYONIC HUMANS
CANBERRA, November 15, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Australia's Parliament is expected to legalize research on embryonic humans next week. In September, the Legislative Assembly (the lower house) approved a bill to allow about 70,000 "spare embryos" created for IVF to be used for stem cell research. Now, the Senate is expected to pass the bill next Monday after a week-long debate.
The announcement comes even as the Australian natural fertility rate is hitting all-time lows. In the 25 years since 1976, fertility has remained below the 2.1 replacement level as is typical in contraception/abortion-plagued developed countries, with a drop to only 1.72 Aussie babies per woman of childbearing age in 2001.
