RESIGNATIONS CONTINUE OVER ANGLICAN BLESSING OF HOMOSEXUAL UNIONS
NORTH VANCOUVER, November 19, 2002 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A second Anglican clergyman has resigned over his bishop's endorsement of homosexual marriage. Rev. Dr. Timothy Cooke, rector of North Vancouver's St. Martin's Church, cited the failure of the Anglican House of Bishops to enforce its own 1997 guidelines on human sexuality, which preclude blessing of same-sex unions.
Last month, Rev. Colin Goode, rector of Vancouver's Holy Trinity Church, also resigned. Both parishes were among the eight that wish to remain faithful to basic Christian teaching about marriage. The eight formed a coalition called the Anglican Communion in New Westminster, which includes one of the crown jewels of Canadian Anglicanism, St. John's Shaughnessy.
But the House of Bishops rejected proposals to bring in a "flying bishop" to shepherd Anglicans across diocesan boundaries where the local bishop is a renegade, as in the case of Vancouver's Michael Ingham. The latter's comment on Rev. Cooke's resignation was: "I think that it was the honourable thing to do," he said, citing majority approval of homosexual marriage at this year's synod meeting, orchestrated by Ingham himself.
