HOMOSEXUAL CLUB FAILS TO ACHIEVE CLUB STATUS AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY
TORONTO, October 9, 2002 (LSN.ca) - A homosexual club which was set to receive official club status at St. Michael's University, a Catholic affiliate of the University of Toronto, failed to turn in its application by the deadline last Thursday. Four days prior to the deadline, LifeSite published the story revealing that (Queers at St. Mike's College) was well on its way to receiving official approval at the college having already obtained the required signatures of three religious, among whom was St. Michael's College chaplain Fr. Terry Kersch.
Since the LifeSite coverage, the administration has received a flurry of complaints. Some of the complaints offended St. Michael's College Principal Professor Mark McGowan. In an interview with LifeSite McGowan said some of the emails he received were "hateful". McGowan told LifeSite that prior to the LifeSite coverage of the situation he had not heard that condoms were distributed during orientation at the college. McGowan also said that he had not heard about the kick off event consisting of a tour of Toronto's 'gay village'.
McGowan said that the Catholic college operates on an inclusiveness statement which was approved July 22, 2002 by the Collegium - which McGowan described as the chief governing officers of St. Michael's College made up of both clergy and laity. The statement reads in part: "St. Michael's is committed to doing everything it can to ensure that people of all backgrounds regardless of religion, colour, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social or economic class and nationality will feel welcome in its midst."
While failed to become an official club this year, they are continuing to carry on club-like activities on the Catholic campus, putting up posters and planning homosexually oriented social events.
