INDIA'S TOP COURT BANS SEX-SELECTION ABORTION ADVERTISING
NEW DELHI, October 9, 2002 (LSN.ca) - India's Supreme Court has ordered state governments to enforce the law and punish clinics that advertise and promote sex-selection abortions.
Like China, India officially discourages families from having "too many" children -- but does not officially encourage sex-selection. But the Indian Medical Association says up to two million baby girls are aborted every year due to a cultural preference for sons.
Sanjay Parikh, the lawyer representing an NGO that opposes famale infanticide and ultrasound sex selection, told the high court that advertisements for the "service" continue to appear, in violation of lower court orders as well as the country's long-ignored Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act.
