TORONTO, September 6, 2002 (LSN.ca) - LifeSite has learned that an anti-Catholic, pro-abortion publication is being funded by church-funded organizations. The Social Edge, a magazine featuring well-known dissident 'Catholic' Joanna Manning as one of three regular contributors, is sponsored by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (the official Catholic social justice arm of the Catholic Bishops Conference), Novalis Publications (publishers of the missalette used in most Catholic churches throughout Canada), the Canadian Catholic Health Association, and Scarboro Foreign Missions among others.

In an April article featured in the magazine, Manning spouts her pro-abortion anti-church rhetoric. "By opposing abortion and all forms of contraception, The Vatican fronts itself at the UN as promoting a culture of life. But it is increasingly evident that its ideology and lack of compassion is contributing to a culture of death, especially in the poorest parts of the globe. The See Change Campaign at the UN is one small step towards eliminating its pervasively perverse influence," she wrote. ( http://www.thesocialedge.com/archives/joannamanning/april-column.htm )

Despite billing his offering as a quasi Catholic magazine, publisher Gerry McCarthy shows a flair for anti-Christianity. In a feature interview in the current on-line edition he speaks with Mary Malone the infamous former nun and former Christian who used the media to make a public display of her renunciation of Christianity. The fact that the magazine was receiving support from the Catholic organizations did not come as a shock to Campaign Life Coalition National President Jim Hughes. "I'm not surprised in the least," Hughes told LifeSite recalling the support for other dissident actions from some of the groups listed. He recalled the over $100,000 Development and Peace donated to the pro-abortion March of Women ( http://www.lifesite.net/clc/womens_march/ ), moreover the Catholic Health Association has honored pro-abortion speakers David Suzuki and Stephen Lewis at its annual convention ( http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2001/mar/01032801.html ). Novalis is a product of St. Paul's university, known as a hotbed of dissent ( http://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2002/aug/020812a.html ).
