CARDINAL SAID TO BE ATTENDING TORONTO RED MASS DINNER DESPITE PRO-ABORTION SPEAKER
Joe Clark has been outspokenly opposed to Church on abortion and homosexuality
TORONTO, September 16, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Sources within the Thomas More Lawyers' Guild have told LifeSite that Toronto Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic will be attending the annual Red Mass Dinner even though the keynote address will be delivered by PC Party Leader Joe Clark. Clark has been publicly repudiated for his pro-abortion stand by his own bishop. Bishop Fred Henry, who presides over Clark's diocese, spoke with LifeSite about Clark's speaking engagement at the Red Mass dinner. "I don't know why he has been chosen. He has been a disappointment as a Catholic. He has taken positions contrary to the teaching of the Church. I am surprised he would be invited to speak at the Red Mass dinner," said Bishop Henry.
Several prominent lawyers and churchmen in Toronto are refusing to attend the September 19 dinner as a protest to Clark's appearance. While two sources have confirmed the Cardinal's attendance, calls to the archdiocese media office were still not returned by press time.
Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition Canada, said he was "perturbed that the Cardinal is being pressured to take a stand quite different from that which he took during World Youth Day." During his homily at the opening World Youth Day Mass, the Cardinal told the assembled youth, "When occasions arise we ought to present, calmly and confidently, the faith we live by; we must refuse to feign the politically correct tolerance which imagines that all religions and convictions and values are equally valid." Asked about abortion and embryonic stem cell research on another occasion at World Youth Day, the Cardinal said, "the Church will forever be opposed to it. I don't feel the Church has any choice in the matter" - a response which elicited heartfelt approval from the several hundred youth in attendance.
"I am angry that the organizers are putting the Cardinal in such a situation," continued Hughes. "Perhaps the Cardinal will do what Vancouver's Archbishop Exner had to do and cancel the Red Mass dinner due to inappropriate speakers. While that would be unfortunate for faithful Catholics connected with the guild, at least it would prevent such scandals in the future."
Fr. Alphonse DeValk, editor of Catholic Insight magazine, stated in the September Interim that inviting pro-abortion politicians "gives credibility to the person who has publicly disregarded the pro-life stand, without which the principle of the protection of human life cannot survive."
