TORONTO SEMINARY SUPPORTS PRO-LIFE MOVEMENT, DISAGREES WITH PROF'S STATEMENTS
Professor's views "do not - nor can they ever - reflect those of our Seminary."
TORONTO, September 25, 2002 (LSN.ca) - The prestigious St. Augustine's Seminary in Toronto has come out in full support of the pro-life movement following a controversy over a book published by one of the seminary's part-time professors. Terrance Fay's book "A History of Canadian Catholics," characterizes the pro-life movement as a centre for Catholic dissent. In response to concerns expressed by reportedly at least 25 LifeSite readers, the Seminary responded that Fay is only "a part-time lecturer at St. Augustine's" and that "We disagree strongly with such [Fay's] views, which do not - nor can they ever - reflect those of our Seminary."
The Seminary's official response, signed by St. Augustine's Rector Rev. A. Robert Nusca, and Acting Dean of Studies Rev. Thomas A. Lynch, says: "Pope John Paul II, in Evangelium Vitae, has set out for the Catholic Church a clear plan for the establishment of 'the Culture of Life.' We are called to struggle against the modern evils of abortion and euthanasia, and also to promote the positive values and virtues that will enable us to support all of those faithful members of the Church who are building up this Culture of Life."
Moreover, the letter says: "We are proud to say that St. Augustine's Seminary has taken a lead in promoting this Culture of Life in the theological instruction and formation of the future priests and laity of Canada. In our classes on Moral Theology, in our active and ongoing support of the pro-life movement, and also in the positive actions of its members - especially as they care for the poor and marginalized of our society - St. Augustine's Seminary stands squarely with the pro-life movement in all of their positive works."
Acting Dean of Studies,Fr.Lynch, has been heavily involved in the pro-life movement since his youth, is still a frequent speaker at pro-life events and actively supports pro-life initiatives.
