LEXINGTON, April 9, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Panayiotis Zavos, a scientist who was part of an international consortium of researchers who announced in 2001 that they were going to produce cloned human beings within two years, has published a photo of a cloned human embryo and explanation of his cloning techniques in Reproductive BioMedicine Online, a peer-reviewed journal.
Zavos, a co-founder of a fertility clinic in Lexington and a member of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, says the single four-day old embryo is "the first human cloned embryo for reproductive purposes".

Zavos asserts that he created the cloned human embryo using Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer, the same technique used to create Dolly the famous cloned sheep. He says he will search out and destroy any cloned embryos which show signs of disability prior to implantation. The oocyte (egg) and somatic cell used in the process were both donated by the woman who wants to carry the cloned embryo to tern.
