NYC MAYOR'S VETO OF LAW FORCING ABORTIFACIENTS ON HOSPITALS OVERRIDEN

NEW YORK, April 11, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - New York City Council voted yesterday to override Mayor Michael Bloomberg's veto of legislation requiring hospitals with city contracts to provide abortifacient "emergency contraception" to rape victims. A related bill, the veto for which was also overturned, required pharmacies to post the availability of such abortifacients.
The law relating to hospitals, which denies the ability of Catholic hospitals to function while maintaining their religious convictions, did not receive much media coverage. A two page article in the New York Times which discussed the council's override of three of Bloomberg's veto's devoted a scant two lines on the second page to the mandating of abortifacients. "In addition to the work training bill, the Council also overrode Mr. Bloomberg's vetoes of three other bills. Two will provide women greater access to emergency contraceptives," reported the Times.
