UK'S TOP COURT BANS PRO-LIFE TV ADS SHOWING AN ABORTION

LONDON, April 11, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-lifers seeking to have an abortion broadcast on British television have received a setback. The House of Lords has supported the BBC and other television broadcasters who are refusing to put the "grossly offensive" footage on TV in 2001. A Court of Appeal judgement ruled the censorship illegal last year, and would have allowed the Pro-Life Alliance to broadcast the abortion as part of its election ads for television. But the BBC and others appealed and the Lords quashed the free speech ruling this week.
Lord Justice Laws of the Court of Appeal branded the refusal to broadcast pictures of abortion operations as an act of censorship a year ago.
A spokesman for the Pro-Life Alliance, quoted by the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) that, "Freedom of speech has always been the primary ingredient of democracy. Democracy died today in the United Kingdom."
