DENVER CATHOLIC GROUP WARNS AGAINST PRO-ABORTION CANDIDATE
Self-described Catholic is "proud" to be "pro-choice"
DENVER, April 11, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Catholic men's service club has asked its members and all Catholics not to contribute to city auditor Don Mares' mayoralty campaign because he served on the board of Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood.
"We have today a candidate running for mayor of Denver who lists himself as a Catholic and as a member of the advisory committee for Rocky Mountain Planned Parenthood on his campaign materials," wrote Ricardo Montoya, grand knight of the Bishop Tihen Knights of Columbus Council No. 4796, in an April newsletter to 200 members. "How is this for an oxymoron?" He continued, "We must hold to our Catholic and moral principles and not be contributing to these pro-abortion candidates…He's campaigning as a Catholic, but that's not the whole story. People need more information to be truly informed voters."
Mares reply was: "I'm proud to be pro-family and pro-choice and to have served on a board of a group that provides low-cost health services to women of diverse backgrounds." He has boldly solicited donations from numerous Catholic groups, including fellow high school alumni.
