PRO-LIFE T-SHIRT DAY A HUGE SUCCESS DESPITE SOME SPOILSPORT PRINCIPALS
WASHINGTON, DC - This past Monday, thousands of youth participated in the first-ever National Pro-Life T-shirt Day, an event organized by Rock For Life. Young people from all over the country - mostly students at public schools - had been eagerly anticipating the opportunity to simply wear a pro-life T-shirt as a peaceful statement of support for the pro-life movement. "We are absolutely thrilled that these young people participated in this event," said Sara McKalips of Rock For Life. "We are encouraged
that so many are willing to speak up peacefully for the rights of pre-born people."
Over the past year, Rock For Life has received dozens of calls from students and their parents who have been harassed by administrators, faculty or even other students for wearing pro-life T-shirts. "We have already received calls from students facing threats of detention or suspension for participating in National Pro-life T-shirt Day on Monday," said McKalips. "Based on these earlier cases, we expected this and made arrangements to
have these students' rights protected." The Thomas More Center for Law and Justice, a non-profit firm that defends Christians and their free speech rights, has agreed to take action at no cost on behalf of any students discriminated against for wearing a pro-life T-shirt.
Here are just a few examples of harassment reported on T-shirt day:
- A principal told an eight-year old second grader, who wore his pro-life T-shirt with his parents' permission, to remove the shirt. The boy was singled out for this discriminatory action because the shirt contained the phrase, "stop killing our generation." The youngster's mother is protesting the principal's actions.
- In Maryland, five high school students wearing pro-life shirts were ordered into the principal's office. They have been threatened with suspension if they wear or distribute anything with a pro-life message in the future.
"It's amazing how quickly those who preach 'tolerance' become the most vehemently intolerant when the topic is abortion," said McKalips. "We will not stand by while a narrow-minded few practice such discrimination against pro-lifers. We will stand up for Constitutional rights."
