Liberal MP Warns that Same-Sex Union Compromise Strategy "Won't Work"

Also urges pro-family voters to "defeat everybody who votes in favour of C-250

Toronto, August 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In an interview at the Toronto Defence of Marriage Town Hall meeting last night, outspoken pro-life MP Tom Wappel warned that the supposed compromise strategy of retaining the current definition of marriage, but allowing the legal recognition of same-sex unions "won't work".

Wappel told LifeSite that he did not support the compromise scenario "But certainly I have no doubt that if it were put to a vote it would very likely pass". "The problem", he said, "is that it has already been rejected by the Ontario Court of Appeal as being effectively separate but equal which has already been rejected in human rights cases and it is most certainly rejected by the homosexual community." Wappel continued, "It would never fly as far as the homosexual activists are concerned, so there would be continual court challenges and the unanimous Court of Appeal already said that you can't have two separate institutions because you are discriminating. That's the position that I think the courts will take, so this Great Canadian Compromise won't work."

When asked if Paul Martin would go for that compromise Wappel responded, "he might go for it and what we'll find is that five, six years from now, having gone for it, everybody else being placated and saying OK, everybody lets their guard down, then we'll have another court of appeal or even the Supreme Court saying it's separate but equal folks - it won't work." The experienced MP said "It will only delay the inevitable and give society more time to adjust to what is already taking place and breaking down the barriers just a little bit further so that eventually the vote will be the other way."

"In the long run" said Wappel, referring especially to the next election, "we will need a strong contingent of caucus members in the caucus who support a strong definition of marriage in order to take further necessary measures to protect the family." As well, he strongly emphasized, "defeating this legislation (redefining marriage) isn't the end, it's the beginning, because we have to have something else to protect marriage."

On Bill C-250 Wappel emphasized that it "is a real tight fight. I'll be thrilled if it is defeated, I'll be surprised if it defeated handily." In response to pro-family MPs who are confident that it will be defeated, Wappel warned, "these are the same people who thought it would never come to a vote." He urged pro-family voters to "defeat everybody who votes in favour of C-250, not just the Liberals."
