COURT AGREES WITH HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL THAT BIBLE = HATE LITERATURE
Christian Leader Warns Ruling Shows Danger of Proposed Changes to Hate Laws
REGINA, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a ruling given virtually no media coverage, the Court of Queen's Bench in Saskatchewan, ruled that a man who placed references to Bible verses on homosexuality into a newspaper ad was guilty of inciting hatred. The December 11, 2002 decision was in response to an appeal of a 2001 Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission (HRC) ruling which ordered both the Saskatoon StarPhoenix newspaper and Hugh Owens of Regina to pay $1,500 to three homosexual activists for publishing an ad in the Saskatoon newspaper quoting bible verses regarding homosexuality.
The purpose of the ad was to indicate that the Bible says no to homosexual behaviour. The advertisement displayed references to four Bible passages: Romans 1, Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 20:13 and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, on the left side. An equal sign (=) was situated in the middle, with a symbol on the right side. The symbol was comprised of two males holding hands with the universal symbol of a red circle with a diagonal bar superimposed over top.
Justice J. Barclay rejected the appeal ruling: "In my view, the Board was correct in concluding that the advertisement can objectively be seen as exposing homosexuals to hatred or ridicule. When the use of the circle and slash is combined with the passages of the Bible, it exposes homosexuals to detestation, vilification and disgrace. In other words, the Biblical passage (sic) which suggest that if a man lies with a man they must be put to death exposes homosexuals to hatred."
Janet Epp Buckingham, Legal Counsel for the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada told LifeSite that "The ruling that a verse from the Bible can be considered to expose homosexuals to hatred shows the danger for Scripture if Bill C-250 passes." Bill, C-250, proposed by homosexual activist MP Svend Robinson would see "sexual orientation" added to hate crime law as a prohibited ground of discrimination.

INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT HAS FULL SLATE OF ELECTED JUDGES
NEW YORK, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - On Friday night, national delegates to the United Nations meeting on the establishment of the International Criminal Court (ICC) completed their election of judges. A total of 18 judges were chosen from among 43 candidates. Six will serve for nine years, six for six years, and six for three years.
The 18 judges will be sworn in during a ceremony on 11 March at the ICC headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. The role of the judges, and that of the Prosecutor who is expected to be elected at the Assembly's next session in April, are key to shaping the Court. The treaty establishing the Court, which entered into force on 1 July 2002, has thus far been ratified by 88 countries.
The judges are: Ms. Elizabeth Odio Benito (Costa Rica); Mr. Rene Blattmann (Bolivia); Ms. Maureen Harding Clark (Ireland); Ms. Fatoumata Dembele Diarra (Mali); Mr. Adrian Fulford (United Kingdom); Mr. Karl Hudson-Phillips (Trinidad and Tobago); Mr. Claude Jorda (France); Mr. Hans-Peter Kaul (Germany); Mr. Philippe Kirsch (Canada); Mr. Erkki Kourula (Finland); Ms. Akua Kuenyehia (Ghana); Mr. Georghios Pikis (Cyprus); Ms. Navanethem Pillay (South Africa); Mr. Mauro Politi (Italy); Mr. Tuiloma Neroni Slade (Samoa); Mr. Sang-hyun Song (Republic of Korea); Ms. Sylvia Helena de Figueiredo Steiner (Brazil); and Ms. Anita Usacka (Latvia).

SCIENTISTS ATTEMPT TO REVIVE EMBRYO STEM CELL RESEARCH
WASHINGTON, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - U.S. researchers claim to have developed a method to ensure embryonic stem cells grow into tissue desired by scientists rather than developing into tumors as they have in previous experiments. Dr. Thomas Zwaka and James Thomson say they have been able to delete a gene from the embryonic stem cells and thus claim they are able to direct them to become brain tissues.
Embryonic stem cell research has had major setbacks since experimentation has shown that the stem cells cause tumors. A study on rats that had proponents of embryonic stem cell research raving about the wonders of the unethical science, contained startling information on the harm of such research. While headlines trumpeted "Stem Cells May Treat Parkinson's", buried in the story is the fact that the researchers found that more than one in four of the animals used in the study developed tumors after the injection of embryonic stem cells.

CANADIAN IMMIGRATION MINISTER PUSHING AHEAD WITH BIOMETRIC NATIONAL ID CARDS
Privacy Commissioner issued a "solemn and urgent warning" against the plan
OTTAWA, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Immigration Minister Dennis Coderre argued in the House of Commons for a national identification card with a biometric identifier such as a fingerprint or eye scan. Coderre cited U.S. border security measures as the pressing need for the measure.
However, the suggestion came under fire from the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, George Radwanski, who has issued a "solemn and urgent warning" that the Federal Government is on a path that threatens to wipe out key privacy rights and, with them, important elements of freedom as we know it.
"The Government is, quite simply, using September 11 as an excuse for new collections and uses of personal information about all of us Canadians that cannot be justified by the requirements of anti-terrorism and that, indeed, have no place in a free and democratic society," he said.

ROMANIA HAS 70% ABORTION RATE
BUCHAREST, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A devastating abortion rate of 70% has, during the past 12 years, claimed the lives of the equivalent of one-third of Romania's stagnant population of 24 million people.
In 2002, there were 700,000 abortions accounting for well over two-thirds of the one million pregnancies recorded, both within marriage and extramarital. Canada's abortion casualty rate is closer to one-third.
Even in light of the staggering figures, Glasgow's Sunday-Herald spoke for Western media when the paper commented, "The transition for women from baby-producers to individuals in charge of their own bodies has been difficult. But now that the population fails to renew itself, the self-appointed guardians of the nation have swung into action," a dismissive reference to Romania's tiny pro-life movement.

PRO-LIFE WOMAN TESTIFIES SHE HELPED KOPP ESCAPE
"I believed he was innocent," says young consultant
BUFFALO, February 10, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A young pro-life business consultant has admitted she drove self-confessed abortionist-shooter James C. Kopp across the Mexico border in 1998 while he was being hunted by police. Jennifer Rock, now 32, told a court hearing that she was willing to help when Kopp called her because she believed he was innocent.
It was the beginning of his year-long flight to England, Scotland, Ireland and France that ended two years ago with Kopp's capture by French police in a mediaeval village in Brittany.
Ms. Rock testified, with immunity from prosecution as in the past, that Kopp told her "he was in trouble," but told her not to believe anything she read in the newspapers linking him to the Slepian murder, the Buffalo News reports.

PRO-LIFE BLACK FEMALE TIPPED FOR U.S. SUPREME COURT
WASHINGTON, February 10, 2003 - Nine years after Bill Clinton filled the last Supreme Court vacancy with pro-abortion feminist Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the next expected retirees remain Chief Justice William Rehnquist, 78, and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, 72.
Many predict that Bush could fill a future vacancy with the court's first Hispanic justice, such as Bush advisor Alberto Gonzales, appellate Judge Emilio M. Garza of Texas, and lawyer Miguel Estrada.
But Bush could also throw a curve ball at partisan, race-obsessed Democrats by nominating California Supreme Court Justice Janice Rogers Brown, making her the court's third woman and second African-American. She is a conservative black women who has ruled against affirmative action and so-called "abortion rights." The choice would also echo George Bush Sr.'s 1991 appointment of Clarence Thomas, a black conservative, to replace liberal ideologue Thurgood Marshall. At the time, the move disarmed Democrats, who hated Thomas's philosophy but who, in the Senate confirmation process, felt they could not vote against a black.

MORE RESPONSE TO PETER KREEFT TALK AT TORONTO ST. MIKE'S COLLEGE
Staff from St. Michael's College student newspaper "The Mike" have advised LifeSite that:
1.They have put on line, in MP3 format, the audio of the recorded part of the Peter Kreeft session so that listeners can make up their own minds about the comments by professor Kreeft and his questioners. See http://www.themike.ca/
2. In the Nov. 22 issue of "The Mike" there are two more articles on the Kreeft lecture.
http://www.themike.ca/issues/vol56issue7.pdf
An article on page 2, although confused on the subject of homosexuality, takes issue with campus gay activists' "venomous disapproval of ideological opponents".
A second article, on page 6, provides a fair report on the Kreeft event.
