SCALIA BLAMES POLITICIZATION OF COURT NOMINATIONS ON JUDICIAL ACTIVISM

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

PHILADELPHIA, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The politicization of the judicial nomination process is, by definition, the result of the philosophy of left-wing judicially-active judges and their supporters in the legislative and/or executive branch, according to Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Scalia said his judicial philosophy is that the Constitution means the same thing now as it did when it was first drafted, and that it should be read literally for the most part. This "originalist" doctrine is not a politically conservative interpretation, he explained, but the proper way for a judge to do his job. Judges on the left, however, believe their role is to reinterpret, update and even correct the Constitution to fit the times, Scalia told a University of Pennsylvania audience.

Referring to liberals who tailor the law to suit political agendas, Scalia lamented, "The most important thing we look for are judges who will read into the Constitution the rights that we like, and read out of the Constitution the rights that we don't like."

DOLLY THE SHEEP PUT DOWN DUE TO DISEASE

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

EDINBURGH, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult original, has been put down after being diagnosed with a progressive lung disease, just six months after she was found to have arthritis.

Dr. Harry Griffin at the Roslin Institute, where Dolly was created in 1996, said that a sheep's normal life-span is 11 or 12 years and that lung infections usually occur in older sheep. In 1999, Dolly's cells already began to look more like those of an older animal.

"Many attempts to clone animals have ended in failure," the Washington Post reports. "Deformed fetuses have died in the womb with oversized organs, while others were born dead. Still others died days after being born, some twice as large as they should have been."

ALUMNI AND PROFS SUPPORT TORONTO CATHOLIC CAMPUS PRO-LIFE GROUP RE: PETER KREEFT

Criticize principal of prominent Canadian Catholic college for undermining free speech

TORONTO, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Nearly a dozen professors from or associated with the University of St. Michael's College (USMC - an affiliate of the University of Toronto) have signed an open letter responding to the principal of the Catholic College who denounced a lecture by world renowned Catholic philosopher Dr. Peter Kreeft. The Kreeft lecture, organized by the pro-life students group at USMC, was attacked vehemently by homosexual activists who had protest post cards printed even prior to the talk.

USMC Principal, Professor Mark McGowan, wrote, "The Kreeft lecture greatly detracted from the inclusive and respectful environment we are trying to nurture at St. Michael's." In response, a group of professors and alumni said they were "deeply concerned by the chilling implication" of the statement by Principal McGowan and the Principal's Advisory Committee on Sexual Orientation.

FORMER TORONTO PRO-LIFE ACTIVIST EXPOSES MASS KILLING OF SUDAN CHRISTIANS

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

SUDAN, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - WorldNetDaily reports today that an evangelical relief group has exposed a recent mass killing of about 3,000 mostly Christian civilians in the Sudan. The country's radical Islamist government is the likely culprit as it continues its almost 15 years bloody Jihad against the country's minorities.

The Christian group, called Servant's Heart, included Mel Middleton, president of Alberta based Freedom Quest International. Middleton is fondly remembered by veteran Toronto pro-life activists for his deep commitment to save the lives of the weakest and most vulnerable persons. While he lived in Toronto in the 1980's he was very active in pro-life efforts to close down a Toronto abortuary and was one of the pioneers of active evangelical involvement in the abortion issue in Canada.

The U.S. State Department has forwarded the findings of the Servant's Heart group to the international Civilian Protection and Monitoring Team assigned to report on violations of the March 2002 Sudan Peace Pact.

NEW PRIMATE OF CANADA CALLS FOR RE-AWAKENING OF CONSCIENCES AND FAITH IN QUEBEC

Deplores "negligible birthrate and the catastrophe of teen suicide"

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

QUEBEC CITY, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Archbishop Marc Ouellette, newly appointed to the Catholic Archdiocese of Quebec City, spoke about Quebec's negligible birthrate and the crisis of faith in his inaugural homily as Archbishop on January 26. Archbishop Ouellette holds the title of Primate of Canada since his diocese is the oldest in Canada - and in fact North America (apart from the Diocese of Mexico).

Luc Gagnon, President of Campaigne Quebec Vie (Campaign Life Quebec) told LifeSite he has been most impressed with the calibre of Archbishop Ouellette. "This marks a new era in the history of the Church in Quebec," said Gagnon.

A portion of the Primate's inaugural homily follows:
"The time is short; it is time to reawaken consciences and the decision of faith. Quebec languishes far from the values that were the strength and glory of her ancestors. The just desire for cultural survival runs up dramatically against our negligible birthrate and the catastrophe of teen suicide. These incomprehensible suicides tear us apart and alarm us about the situation of the families and the values that should give meaning to our life. Aren't these signs of the most serious impoverishment which strikes at Quebec society: the forgetting of its spiritual heritage… The preservation of our cultural inheritance is a well recognized priority, but how much is it necessary to ensure education in the spiritual virtues and attitudes which form the souls and the destiny of a people! … It is not too late to seek together, as pastors and faithful, as citizens, the means of regenerating the Christian culture which shaped Quebec of yesterday and today."
(translation by Mark Cameron http://www.markcameron.blogspot.com )

HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE RIGHTS BILL PROPOSED IN CANADIAN PARLIAMENT

Meanwhile, activists stage Valentine's media stunts from coast to coast

SHARE: E-mail E-MAIL  Print PRINT

OTTAWA, February 14, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Homosexual activist MP Svend Robinson yesterday introduced his legislation bill C-392 to legalize homosexual 'marriage'. The homosexual activist MP has also introduced Bill C-250 which would add homosexuals as a category to Canadian hate crimes law.

Meanwhile, from coast to coast homosexual activists were staging Valentine's media stunts to draw attention to their quest for marriage rights. In an effort coordinated by the homosexual activist group EGALE, homosexual couples in Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia demanded marriage licences from their local marriage registry offices.

The activists coordinated extensive media coverage for the stunts and evidently the media complied. Art & Wayne from Moncton, New Brunswick reported to a homosexual activist website that there was "a media frenzy at our meeting. We had five (5) television stations, and four (4) radio stations present."
