PRO-LIFERS SET TO CAPITALIZE ON REPUBLICAN SENATE TAKEOVER

WASHINGTON, January 2, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Galvanized as Republicans take control of the Senate this month, pro-lifers are readying their legislative wish list for what may prove to be a narrow window of opportunity before the 2004 elections. At the top of the agenda is a partial birth abortion ban, repeatedly vetoed by President Clinton and bogged down while Democrats controlled the Senate during much of the first two years of the Bush Administration.
Other items include supplementing parental notification laws to punish taking a minor across state lines for an abortion; making it a separate crime to harm an unborn child during an attack on a pregnant woman; and giving hospitals and other facilities the right to refuse to perform abortions without fear of federal government financial penalties.
Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, considered the third ranking Republican in the new Senate leadership and strongly pro-life, warns that "we still don't have anything I would consider a pro-life majority in the Senate" - but says that a partial-birth abortion ban will not be difficult to pass.
