PLANNED PARENTHOOD SHIELDS ANOTHER 'STATUTORY RAPIST'
ANCHORAGE, January 27, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The trial of an Alaska Planned Parenthood employee, accused of winking at sexual abuse of a minor and counselling a teen on a telephone help line to lie about her boyfriend's age (22) to protect him from prosecution for statutory rape, is now in its third week.
Refusing to admit there is any crime involved, Planned Parenthood is challenging the state's parental notification and consent law, which requires unmarried girls under 17 to get permission from a parent or judge before they can legally procure an abortion. The unnamed Planned Parenthood employee "exercised bad judgment," executive director Anna Franks told the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, and has undergone retraining. But she notes that no crime was committed and the law, which has been suspended since 1997 pending the outcome of this suit, unfairly restricts the rights of young women seeking an abortion.
Called by a woman posing as a 13-year-old girl, and hired by the Texas-based pro-life group Life Dynamics, the Planned Parenthood help line representative told the girl her boyfriend could be "way out of bounds. ... I mean, legally he's taking advantage of a minor." Later, the "girl" asked if "you're sure that nobody has to know about my boyfriend?" The Planned Parenthood employee said, "I'm sure no one has to know about your boyfriend. That's your choice."
