Northern Ireland Judge Rejects Pro-Abortion Demand
BELFAST, July 7, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-lifers in Northern Ireland declared victory as a senior judge rejected the Family Planning Association's attempt to have guidelines for legalized abortion put in writing because, the FPA alleged, the current unwritten law is "unclear."
Common law in the province of Northern Ireland states that abortion is permitted when the life, mental or physical health of the mother are at risk. The judge did not change this, but suggested that the Government could bring greater clarity if it chose to legislate on the issue.
But Betty Gibson, spokesman for the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, said, "The law is perfectly clear. The law on abortion in Northern Ireland gives considerable protection to unborn children which is what the overwhelming majority of people here want." Gibson quoted Mo Mowlam, a former pro-abortion Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, who lamented the protection of unborn children but said, "It's called democracy."
