KENYAN HEALTH MINISTER ANNOUNCES PUBLIC DEBATE GEARED TO LEGALIZE ABORTION
Result of international pressure, especially by United Nations Population Fund
NAIROBI, March 4, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Speaking at the launch of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (Africa Region) Strategic Plan, Kenyan Health Minister Charity Ngilu said the Government plans to lead a public debate geared to decriminalizing abortion. "I personally feel the continued denial of women to make free choice on their reproductive health life is wrong and the policy should be reformed to allow that freedom," the minister said.
International pressure on Kenya to allow abortion and contraception to further population control has been fierce. The pressures became intense in 1999 and have continued since. The Catholic Church in Kenya has repeatedly exhorted the rejection of abortion and decried the pro-abortion pressure exerted by international groups and specifically the United Nations Population Fund.
Bishop Nicodemus Kirima, the head of the Nyeri Catholic Archdiocese stressed the seriousness of the international pressure. Speaking at St Mary's Boys Secondary School in 1999 he said that the Church's stand on contraception would never change "even if one was to be killed for opposing condom use". Bishop Kirima urged chastity and said sex-ed would exacerbate the spread of AIDS since it "would open floodgates to irresponsible and immoral youths."
