An Urgent Appeal to Catholic Church Leaders for Stronger Leadership During Elections
Catholic voters must be told to end scandal of pro-abortion 'Catholic' politicians

Your Grace,
President George W. Bush, a good Southern Baptist, is focused on building a 'Culture of Life' in the USA. He is, however, opposed in his efforts by 12 prominent and powerful Catholic Senators, ie. Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Mary Landrieu, Tom Harkin, Tom Daschle, Patty Murray, Joseph Biden, Susan Collins, Christopher Dodd, Patrick Leahy, Barbara Mikulski, and Jack Reed, and by 163 Congressmen, by virtually all media, big labour, a clutch of multi-billionaire 'champagne socialists' (including the chief advisor to Paul Martin, Maurice Strong), most of the Democratic Party, all of the pro-choice, feminist, population control, gay advocacy, greens, and abortion organizations.
Senator John Kerry, for example, is endorsed by abortion advocates as a 'safe' pro-choice solution to their 'problem' with George Bush, as a president, fearing the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Despite formidable opposition, and despite having no political reason for doing it, President Bush has courageously and successfully obtained protection in federal US law, for children in the womb, backing 29 states which have similar protection in state law. (see link below to Zenit article)
Canadian Catholics must start selecting politicians who will present legislation and vote to protect life at all stages. Being 'pro-choice, therefore, must be a 100% disqualifier to support by a Catholic voter. This should be automatic. Catholic voters must be told by their bishops and priests about their role in protecting life, in no uncertain terms.
To have Nova Scotia Catholics bringing their wives, daughters, and girl-friends for abortions is not uncommon. Failing to instruct the faithful from the pulpit, and failing in Catechetics programs to impart what the Catholic Church teaches concerning protection of life, urgently requires remedy. How many more lives must be ruined before we correct these glaring deficiencies that corrupt and diminish our church?
The best time to begin is right before the next federal election is called. That's now. Catholics must get this message or more bad choices of MPs will have been made.
- Why not advise your fellow bishops that you intend to brief your priests and deacons, and to call news conferences to let everyone know that Nova Scotia Catholics will be standing firm in solidarity with innocent life?
- Why not demand a 'Conscience Law' to protect Healthcare workers from coercion, threats, demotions, bad shift allocation, ceilings on promotion, and dismissals, for resisting anti-life duties, such as providing assistance to abortion, IVF, sterilization, selective reductions, MAPs, search and destroy ultrasounds (Downs, Spinal Bifida, etc.)?
- Why not announce that Nova Scotia Catholics support the tremendous step taken by President Bush today?
When I pass our 'Maternity - Abortion' hospital in Halifax (about 1700 babies killed per year), I remember Catholic politicians Trudeau, Turner, and Chretien who legalized abortion in 1969, and I'm sickened. Canadian Catholics are Judases, having betrayed innocent blood.
35 years and millions of killings later, abortion in Canada is wide open, totally unfettered, and it remains the responsibility of Canadian Catholics. Our Catholic Prime Ministers, Mulroney, Clark, Chretien, and Martin, one after the other, with majorities given to them by Catholic voters, continue to do nothing to protect the unborn. Unfortunate statements by the CCCB have time and again let Catholic MPs off the hook, just at the critical point in public debate on life issues, resulting in Catholic MPs being 'freed' to vote against life.
I remember attending a talk in Halifax by Jennifer Leddy, who was here from Ottawa at the behest of Bishop Hayes, ostensibly to advise Halifax Catholics that opposing abortion would be a somewhat primitive, intellectually inferior position, as Canadian law had been changed, after all, to allow it. By the time she was finished her presentation, a line had spontaneously formed at the mike, right to the back of the hall.
About thirty faithful Nova Scotia Catholics, including a young Catholic judge, collectively felt a responsibility to protect the unborn, and they were ready to take her on. Rightly so. After listening to the feedback, and having some lunch, her message had changed! It's my opinion, however, that Ms. Leddy, being still ensconced at the CCCB, and having influence on Catholic bishops and CCCB staff, should be cause for grave concern to Pro-life Catholics.
Most Catholic bishops and clergy remain silent on the duty of Catholics, as citizens, to vote for pro-life candidates, and to vote against pro-abortion sitting members. They rarely challenge Catholic politicians with anti-life voting records, and in failing to publicly defend the innocents, Catholic clergy create an unfortunate by-product, that is, Catholics in general are misled in belief that nothing can be done to stop abortion (the Jennifer Leddy message), and that we have no collective responsibility, as Catholics, to stop the killing. These beliefs are simply not true.
The time has come, Your Grace, to coordinate an effort that will push legal protection up the long, slippery slope, in order to protect the lives of all Canadians from conception to natural death.
Your servant in Christ,
Ed Mullen
