ST. PAUL, April 5, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Minnesota House has passed the contentious health-funding bill called, the Taxpayer's Protection Act. LifeSiteNews.com reported March 29th, that the Minnesota Health Human Services Finance Committee had approved the Taxpayer's Protection Act that would, among other things, restrict public funding for family planning to agencies that do not procure or refer for abortions. Naral Pro-Choice Minnesota had lobbied against the bill calling it a "super gag law" and complaining that it would hamper the ability of abortionists to provide their 'services.'

Representative Phyllis Kahn, DFL-Minneapolis, argued that restricting family planning funds to organizations such as Planned Parenthood would only lead to more unwanted pregnancies and more abortions.

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life executive director Scott Fishbach told LifeSiteNews.com, "It's simply a bill that gets the state out of subsidizing the abortion industry. A lot of other states and the federal government have opted out of abortion funding and even the UN to an extent."

In Minnesota 1 out of 4 abortions are paid for by the state. Polls have shown that Minnesotans support the pro-life position. Said Fishbach, "The policy of the State of Minnesota will be that you can't get a tax-supported family planning grant if you want to perform abortions. The bill will make it so the taxpayers don't have to pay for abortions directly."

The bill must now go to the Senate this week and is likely to pass.
