ST PAUL, April 13, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - LifeSiteNews.com has been following the progress of a bill in Minnesota that proposed to discontinue state funding of organizations that commit or refer for abortions. The bill, called the Taxpayers' Protection Act was defeated in the state Senate early Thursday after being added to an omnibus budget proposal. The Senate held a marathon 12-hour debate over the provision but the 42-23 vote makes it unlikely that the House of Representatives will be able to bring the measure back.

The bill would have limited family planning grant money to those organizations that prefer life-giving options to abortion. It had been heavily supported by local pro-life groups. There is widespread support among the public in Minnesota for the state to get out of the abortion business. The representatives who brought the measure forward have promised to continue the fight.
