EGALE Canada very concerned about effectiveness of organized opposition to Bill C-250
KINGSTON, Ontario, April 13, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a bid to garner support for opposition to Bill C-250, Presbyterian minister Rev. Tristan Emmanuel has been addressing groups throughout Canada, including an address to a group last week in Kingston. Kingston's Whig-Standard newspaper was there to report on the event.
"Precedent has been that religious rights are relative and minority rights are absolute, and that's dangerous," Emmanuel told the assembly. "If you don't defend your faith in the public square, no one else will."
"I don't believe anything I stand for, or say, is hate," he told Robin Heron of the Whig-Standard. "To get to the heart of the fact, this law limits legitimate criticism of lifestyles."
In the pro-homosexual agenda "blog" of EGALE Canada, an activist group that promotes homosexuality, Executive Director, Gilles Marchildon, wrote the following:
"Bill C-250, Svend Robinson's bill to add 'sexual orientation' as a ground in hate propaganda legislation, is in danger of not becoming law. The House of Commons passed the Bill back in September but it is stuck in the Senate."
"Laurie Arron, EGALE's Director of Advocacy, provided me with a stark update today. "Senators are being bombarded with calls and e-mails from opponents of C-250. The religious right is going all out on this one. They're telling people that C-250 will be used to silence those expressing opposition to equal marriage. This past week Senator Joyal, sponsor of the bill in the Senate, received over 4,500 e-mails and hundreds of phone calls. All the Senators are facing the same onslaught of opposition from misinformed Canadians."
Free Dominion/Citizens Voice has sent the following to supporters of its effort:
"Thank you for your response to the http://www.killbillc250.com site. Because of you and many other Canadians like you, the vote on Bill C250 has been delayed until after the Senate reconvenes on April 20. To date we have sent over 480,000 letters to our politicians. This has made a great impact and we thank you for taking the time to act on behalf of the future of Canada. Our goal is to have over 1 million Canadians voicing their opposition to this Bill by the end of April."
The organization states that it has drafted a NEW letter to the Senate on Bill C-250 and is urging C-250 opponents to go to its site to send the new letter to the Senate. They have also added a feature for writing a letter to the editors of local and national newspapers.
Finally, organizers are strongly encouraging participation in the "National Liberty Day Rally this Saturday April 17
