Wisconsin Governor Doyle Vetoes Conscience Legislation for Heath Care Workers and Facilities
MADISON, April 21, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, at the State Capitol Wednesday, vetoed Assembly Bill 67, a bill that would have protected medical professionals and facilities from being forced to participate in abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, the deliberate destruction of human embryos for research purposes and the use of fetal tissue from aborted babies.
Susan Armacost, Legislative Director of Wisconsin Right to Life said, "While we are not surprised that the Governor will veto AB 67 given his ties to the radical pro-abortion lobby, it should be shocking to all Wisconsin residents that he would want to force medical professionals and facilities to engage in activities that everyone agrees involves the deliberate destruction of human life."
Wisconsin Right to Life promotes the enactment of legislation that would protect medical professionals and facilities from being forced to participate in abortion, euthanasia, assisted suicide, the deliberate destruction of human embryos for research purposes and the use of fetal tissue from aborted babies.
"Assembly Bill 67 does not ban any of the activities outlined in the legislation," said Armacost. "It merely protects those particular health care professionals and facilities who believe their mission is to treat and heal and not to engage in activities that deliberately destroy human life. Exercising one's conscience rights in these particular areas should not result in a medical professional losing their job or being slapped with a lawsuit."
Armacost told LifeSiteNews.com Wednesday that in light of the milieu for pro-life physicians and health care workers becoming increasingly hostile, these workers require protection afforded by legislation such as AB 67. Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers and promoters are increasingly going to court, she said, to force physicians and health care workers to perform or assist in abortions.
