Responses to Drop in Canada's Birth Rate Ignore Major Cause

OTTAWA, April 21, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Canadians are reacting to the Statistics Canada report of April 19, 2004, indicating the country has developed dangerously low birth and fertility rates. The fertility rate is now 25 % under the minimum replacement level. However, discussion seems to be ignoring a major element that is contributing to this crisis.

Statistics Canada on March 31, 2004 released three-year-old statistics on the number of babies killed by abortion in Canada. 106,418 babies were killed in their mothers' wombs in 2001 while there were 333,744 births during the same year. In other words, one quarter of those already conceived were killed.

"Our people are not replacing themselves", said Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. "More than two million babies have been killed by abortion since 1969", he continued. "Our Culture of Death at the beginning of life leads to a dead culture and a dying country."

"What troubles many Canadians is that the government is paying for this drastic reduction in our numbers. Why would our tax dollars support a cull against an endangered species, especially against our own?" said Karen Murawsky, Public Affairs Director, Campaign Life Coalition in Ottawa.

Campaign Life Coalition urges the federal government to stop this headlong demise of Canada by returning protection to its most precious resource, its children, the future of Canada.
