Doctor at Toronto Catholic Hospital tells teens how to have "full enjoyment of sexual experience"
Assures them doctors won't tell parents if they want abortion or abortifacient drugs
TORONTO, February 9, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A doctor at a prominent downtown Catholic hospital offered advice to teenage girls last month at the Women's Health Matters Forum and Expo. Dr. Sari Kives, a doctor at St. Michael's Hospital specializing in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric & Adolescent Gynecology, rather than even broach the topic of abstinence, told teens gathered from local high schools, "without a condom, you can't protect yourselves from sexually transmitted diseases."
Kives' talk, "What to Pack for the Island of Temptation: The Naked Truth About Contraception," promoted the pill, Depro Provera, the IUD and, even though geared at teens, purposely renounced any attempt to promote abstinence till marriage. "You have to realize that when you have sex - I'm not saying don't have sex - but you just need to protect yourself," said Kives.
Beyond the abortifacient contraceptives already mentioned, Kives told the teens to acquire the abortifacient morning after pill Plan B. Kives advised: "All of you guys should get a prescription for Plan B and keep it in your wallet."
She assured the teens doctors would not be able to tell their parents if they went for an abortion or abortifacient drugs. "Adolescents who are mature minors - so if you are smart enough to go see the doctor, tell the doctor you need emergency contraception or you want to have sex, it is the doctor's responsibility to give you birth control pills without telling your parents," she said. "The minor can consent to have an abortion without their parents knowing, as long as they made that decision on their own and they make a mature decision and they seem like they can make an informed decision."
At times the doctor's talk seemed more like preaching rather than advice: "You want full enjoyment of the sexual experience. You don't have to worry about getting pregnant or getting a sexually transmitted disease. So it's important that we bring condoms and start on contraception."
