Vulgar Play Promoting Homosexuality to be Shown at 32 U.S. Catholic Colleges
WASHINGTON, February 9, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The Diocese of Cleveland has warned Catholics about the 'dangers' of the upcoming Mel Gibson film, "The Passion of the Christ" but has apparently not been concerned about the production of the controversial play the 'Vagina Monologues', being sponsored by the local Catholic John Carroll University. The vulgar play is being shown at 32 Catholic colleges and the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS) is fighting to have the colleges abandon the productions.
CNS president Patrick Reilly wrote to the presidents of all U.S. Catholic colleges and universities, involved with the play. He informed them: "The play is a collection of monologues by women describing their personal stories, replete with vulgarity, frequent use of "vagina" to represent women and femininity, and explicit discussions of sexuality and sexual encounters including lesbian activity and masturbation." As well, "In one scene, a woman describes her seduction by a lesbian woman when she was 16 years old, declaring it her "salvation" and an important coming-of-age experience. The older woman leads the girl into sex by serving her alcohol and abusing her authority as an elder."
In a similar campaign last year CNS and others which assisted in the effort caused 14 colleges and universities to cancel the production. Already this year 11 colleges and universities have been removed from the list of those showing the play.
