PORTLAND, February 26, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Some teachers at Marshall High School in Portland have complained to their principal about Christian books and a Bible that were put on display by the Bible Club. The display was dismantled on the advice of the district lawyer. Officials wanted to avoid giving the impression that they might be endorsing Christianity, according to a report by FOXNews.

The Hispanic Club, the Chess Club, and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance have set up similar displays in the school.

Bible Club leader Jeff Chatterton, after speaking to the American Center for Law and Justice has this week, filed a lawsuit citing that the school is infringing on his freedom of speech. Chatterton also argued that the school was in violation of the Federal Equal Access Act, a Supreme Court ruling that allows equal access by all student groups to such things as bulletin boards and school newspapers.

The Portland school told FOXNews that there is a discrepancy between how political and religious clubs are treated, versus academic clubs, in that they allow them the freedom to meet on school grounds, but no access to displays.
