Doctor Claims First Implanted Cloned Human Embryo

LONDON, UK, January 20, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A Kentucky doctor claimed Saturday to have implanted the first human embryo clone into a 35-year-old woman. The claim has been met with scepticism by many scientists.
Panos Zavos, a fertility specialist who works for the Andrology Institute of America in Louisville, Kentucky, has conducted research into cloning human embryos for childless couples for several years. Although he would not specify to reporters where the procedure had taken place, Zavos said that it was not in Europe or the United States.
A Britain's Royal Society spokesman said the scientist's group was "extremely skeptical" of the claim, noting that Zavos did not provide any evidence to back up his claim. At a press conference in London, UK, Zavos told reporters that the procedure used was similar to the one used to create Dolly the sheep, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. He also said that the procedure utilized skin tissue from the woman's husband, and an unfertilized egg from the mother to create the clone, which was later implanted.
