Homosexual Activist Student Group Demands Status at Catholic Seton Hall University

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ, January 21, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A group at Catholic Seton Hall University, the TRUTH organization -- a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and homosexual students group -- wants recognition by the University as an official student organization. Their application was denied last month because administrators found it at odds with the school's Catholic mission.
Dr. Laura Wankel, vice president for student affairs counters that "The most compelling guidance from the Church directs us to care for the human person whose fundamental identity is as a 'child of God' - not a 'heterosexual' or 'homosexual,'" she said. "No organization based solely upon sexual orientation may receive formal university recognition."
Although denied official recognition by the University, TRUTH still operates on campus and receives funding from the office of student affairs. TRUTH also hosts educational events, meetings, and programs, but cannot host social events or sponsor religious activities and services.
