Australian Authorities Approve Scheme to invite Canadians for "Sperm Donor" Holidays
ALBURY, July 8, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Reproductive Medicine Albury is a small country IVF facility in New South Wales that placed an ad in a University of Calgary newspaper to attract young Canadians looking for a cheap holiday down under. The facility is offering a holiday package that is valued at $7000.00 Can. on the condition that the participants masturbate every other day to provide sperm for the facility's IVF donor program. The offer includes return airfares, accommodation for two weeks and a daily allowance of $150.
The MP's who passed the Canadian Reproductive Technologies bill likely had no idea how strange the world of IVF donation had become when they rejected proposals to tighten the legislation's prohibition against the sale of human gametes. It has become common for young women to advertise their ova on internet websites. IVF companies in Canada complained that the bill's mild restrictions against the cash sale of sperm would cause the market to dry up.
The Australian Prohibition of Human Cloning Act makes it illegal to commercially trade in human sperm. However, apparently, Australian legislation does not prohibit the offering of substantial non-monetary rewards for sperm donation. The National Health and Medical Research Council licensing committee deemed that the lavish trip constituted "legitimate re-imbursement for expenses". IVF facilities in Australia have said that the country is experiencing a "sperm drought."
Reproductive Medicine Albury has received hundreds of replies of men wanting to visit Australia, go surfing and become anonymous parents.
