Catholic Missions in Canada Appoints "Pro-Abortion" Former Cabinet Minister to Leadership
TORONTO, July 19, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In a press release today, Catholic Missions In Canada (CMIC) said it was "pleased to announce that former member of Ontario provincial parliament, Tina Molinari, has joined the senior professional team of Catholic Missions In Canada as national director of development." However, LifeSiteNews.com has learned that during her political tenure, Molinari was listed as "pro-abortion" by the pro-life group Campaign Life Coalition.
CMIC, a charitable organization mandated by the Vatican to support the Canadian missions established in 1908, will distribute close to $4-million in grants, loans and bursaries in 2004. The CMIC release notes that "As national director of development, Molinari will be responsible for all aspects of development and promotion in both the private and corporate sectors to ensure the growth and expansion of Catholic Missions In Canada's fundraising efforts."
Campaign Life Coalition lists the results of a 1999 pro-life questionnaire identifying Molinari as accepting abortion when "the physical, emotional and mental well being of the mother is at risk." This is widely considered a practical abortion on demand position. Molinari did not respond to the CLC questionnaire in the 2003 election which she lost.
Before her election to the Ontario legislature, Molinari chaired the York Catholic School Board which at that time was considered a very liberal board. In 2003, on completion of her term as a member of provincial parliament, Molinari joined B'nai Brith Canada's senior executive staff as president of the foundation.
LifeSiteNews.com contacted the Catholic Missions in Canada to inquire about the appropriateness of the appointment, however calls were not returned by press time. The press release also notes that the chair of the board of governors of the CMIC is Toronto Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic. Calls to the Archdiocese were directed to CMIC as the Cardinal was not in his office.
LifeSiteNews.com spoke with a pro-life activist who attended a parish church in Thornhill which Molinari also attended during her political career. Commenting on her appointment to the CMIC, Stell Corbett told LifeSiteNews.com, "I don't particularly understand that one."
