Catholic Missions in Canada Employee Says Calling Her "Pro-Abortion" is Unfair
Comments made to LifeSiteNews.com today confirm CLC evaluation
TORONTO, July 20, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Yesterday LifeSiteNews.com revealed that Catholic Missions in Canada (CMIC), an organ of the Catholic Church and chaired by Toronto Cardinal Aloysius Ambrozic, had appointed a former Ontario cabinet minister listed by a pro-life group as "pro-abortion" to the position of national director of development for CMIC. The former politician in question called LifeSiteNews.com today to object to her being identified as pro-abortion, but after reviewing her comments, the pro-life organization Campaign Life is sticking to its evaluation.
While Molinari did acknowledge filling out a Campaign Life Coalition questionnaire on the issue, she told LifeSiteNews.com, that the pro-life group took her statements out of context: "I beg to differ with being termed pro-abortion," she said. When asked if she changed her position on abortion, she responded, "My position has always been consistent; I am not in support of abortion."
However when LifeSiteNews.com asked if she opposed abortion in all circumstances, Molinari responded, "Well, I am not one to judge a woman's decision to make those decisions. I don't think it's my place to judge. I think that's between the woman, her doctor and her God."
Asked about abortion in relation to her role as a member of the provincial legislature, Molinari said, "As a political representative abortion has been deemed by courts as legal; as politicians I had no authority or influence on a legal medical procedure."
To the suggestion she be called 'pro-life', Molinari responded, "I am not pro-abortion, that I can tell you clearly." Asked, "What then would you call yourself" regarding the issue, Molinari paused and responded eventually, "Again if it would have any effect on the work that I do here I would be happy to engage in a discussion with you, but my role here is specifically. . . "
Molinari said she would be "happy to talk to any of the donors or contributors about any concerns they have," adding, "I don't think this would deter any donations to Catholic Missions."
LifeSiteNews.com contacted Jim Hughes, National President of Campaign Life Coalition and noted Molinari's objections to being called pro-abortion. "It's unfair to peg me as someone who would support abortion," she said. After reviewing Molinari's objections and her responses to LifeSiteNews.com questions, Hughes commented, "I guess we pegged her right then."
