Canadian Woman Awarded $60,000 for "Failed" Abortion
VANCOUVER, July 21, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The B.C. Supreme Court awarded a single mother $60,000 in damages for a "failed" abortion. The child survived the 1997 attempt on its life, and was later born healthy.
The money awarded covers general damages for the "emotional turmoil" she experienced for having to go through with an unwanted pregnancy, and for wages lost during the recovery from giving birth. The court denied compensation for the cost of raising the child. Justice Glen Parrett said "the joy she derives from the presence of this child in her life" constituted enough of a reward to warrant denial of the money to cover the cost of raising the child.
Abortionist Ronald Harold Dabbs from Prince George Regional Hospital, after finding out the baby was still alive, offered the woman money to cross into the U.S. for a partial-birth abortion, which she refused.
The baby was born despite the abortion attempt and the presence of an intra-uterine contraceptive device.
B.C. Campaign Life Coalition President John Hof told LifeSiteNews.com that the baby's "presence is a witness to the miracle that in spite of the best efforts of everyone in his early existence, he survived . . . this baby must have had the hand of God on him from the very beginning."
"The case gives evidence to the fact that women change their minds about having abortions," Hof said. "The first reaction to a crisis pregnancy is usually one that seeks an easy way out. Sober second thoughts, like those of this young mother, lead to the birth of happy wanted children," he said.
"I wonder how many other botched abortions we never hear about because the hired hit man simply convinces the mother to give him another chance to get his intended victim?" he wondered. "More to the point does the abortionist get a chance to double bill for doing an abortion twice?"
