Conservative Party Would Toughen Child Pornography Laws and Scrap Gun Registry

WHITBY, ONTARIO, June 1, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.net) - Stephen Harper announced today that the Conservative party would tighten child pornography laws to eliminate the so-called 'public good' defence and end statutory release for criminals who serve two-thirds of their sentence. The public good defence argues that some pornographic material that would otherwise be banned should be allowed because it has artistic merit. Harper announced the platform saying, "If you do the crime, you do the time."

Harper also said that the Conservatives would scrap the federal gun registry and use the $25 to $100 million saved a year to fight crime by creating a national sex-offender registry and hiring 200 more RCMP officers.
