Pro-Life Canadians Urged to Make Voices Heard in Current Abortion Debates
June 4, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Following the current campaign by Liberal Party strategists and their media handmaids to push the supposed "settled", "non-issue" of abortion to the forefront of the election campaign, pro-life Canadians are being urged to provide balance by making their voices heard in media debates on the matter.
Interim newspaper assistant editor Tony Gosgnach says this can be accomplished through letters to the editors of newspapers, communications to radio and television stations and submissions on live radio talk shows. In most cases, he states, "e-mails can also be sent, and phone calls made, to specific reporters working on abortion-related coverage, to inform them on aspects of the debate they may have missed and correct them in areas where they may have been mistaken." Gosgnach urges letter writers and callers to check the contact information of a specific media outlet to best determine how to make views known to it.
The experienced journalist emphasizes that "for the best chance of publication or being recognized on a broadcast, it is recommended that each communication be short, concise and focus on making just one important point. This could include any of the following:
* Stephen Harper's willingness to allow a free vote in Parliament on abortion and other important issues displays a true willingness for democratic reform and more open government, unlike Paul Martin, who has indicated he will continue the Liberal pattern of top-down, autocratic rule.
* Opinion polls consistently show Canadians oppose the current situation of public funding of elective abortion and its availability throughout all nine months of pregnancy. This is in contrast to the position of Paul Martin, who claims to represent the views of Canadians, but does not.
* The Liberal ploy of dredging up the abortion issue, as well as physical attacks on the Harper campaign, points to increasing desperation and a cynical attempt to deflect attention away from the financial scandals that are still sticking to the Martin government.
* The prominence of abortion as an issue in this election campaign proves that, despite previous claims to the contrary, there is no "social peace" on the issue and the over 100,000 abortions that are performed every year in Canada cannot be swept under the political rug.
* Paul Martin is appearing more each day to be a carbon copy of his scandal-plagued predecessor, who similarly used heavy-handed tactics to ensure the views of backbenchers and MPs outside cabinet were not heard."
Gosgnach adds that pro-life Canadians can make any point relevant to the issue. "The most important thing, he says, is to make one's voice heard as widely and as often as possible. Abortion advocates have understood this for decades and have consistently and effectively followed the basic rules of communicating to the media."
