Harper Wants a Big Tent: Tells Martin if He Can't Stomach Pro-Life Liberals - Send them to Us
OTTAWA, June 9, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Abortion seems to be the central issue of Election 2004. Liberal strategists appear bent on painting Stephen Harper as an extremist anti-abortionist when is anything but that and has never claimed to be anti-abortion. "Stephen Harper is not pro-life, never has been as far as I know," Jim Hughes, national president of Campaign Life Coalition was quoted as saying in several newspapers.
The Liberal strategy which has attempted to paint Harper as a closeted pro-lifer with a hidden agenda has backfired. Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin and Health Minister Carolyn Bennett and campaign spokesmen have all attempted to pin on Harper a pro-life agenda. However Harper has maintained that a Conservative Government would not legislate on abortion. However, he has said that he is open to private member's bills on the issue, as he is on any other issue as well.
"People have a right to their views in this party," Mr. Harper said in Victoria yesterday. "Our members of Parliament have a right to their views on those issues, to push for them privately and, if Paul Martin believes that only his opinions on that subject are tolerated in the Liberal Party, he can send all the other people who don't agree with him over to us."
