No Trace of Irony in Liberal Press Release Accusing Harper of "Stealth" Agenda in Supreme Court Appointments
OTTAWA, June 10, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Team Martin has issued a press release that accuses Conservative party leader Harper of having a "radical" social re-engineering agenda that he will be implementing by stealth, in part, by appointing Supreme Court Justices that uphold socially conservative values.
The release accuses Harper of having a "secret" plan that will involve advancing his "moral agenda," by manipulating the courts. Martin has attempted to deflect attention from his sinking poll results and the Liberal Party's own three decades of manipulating the social fabric of Canada by saying that Supreme Court appointments "would also allow Harper and the Alliance Conservatives (sic) to accomplish their conservative goals by stealth."
In the same breath however, Martin says he learned of this "stealth" agenda by reading about it in a publicly available national newsmagazine. The press release refers to, "a strategy Harper outlined in a June 2003 article called "Rediscovering the Right Agenda" that he authored for The Report Newsmagazine."
Harper has said that he would re-establish the supremacy of the democratically elected Parliament over the appointed Supreme Court.
Paul Tuns, editor-in-chief of The Interim, Canada's life and family newspaper, told LifeSiteNews.com that "the Liberals lack the sense of irony to appreciate the chutzpah in their latest attacks on Harper. It is the Liberals under Trudeau and Chretien that used the Supreme Court to implement a radical agenda that changed Canada beyond recognition."
Phil Horgan, a lawyer and Vice President of the Catholic Civil Rights League agreed. "The importance of two appointments to the Supreme Court pales in comparison to the six appointments of Jean Chretien with an average shelf life of 20 years," Horgan told LifeSiteNews.com. "To have the majority of the court be in place for the better part of a generation, now that's influence."
Said Tuns, "The Liberals undid Canada's entire history of limited government and personal responsibility and were not considered anti-Canadian." Tuns points out the double standard of the Liberal position, "I guess the Liberals are once again considering what they do as being Canadian and normal and permissible, while anything proposed by the Conservatives is anti-Canadian, radical and dangerous."
