Theft over $5000 Not First Criminal Charge against Homosexual Activist Former MP Svend Robinson

VANCOUVER, June 22, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Homosexual activist former MP Svend Robinson, who was caught by hidden video stealing a $50,000 ring, has finally been criminally charged with theft over $5000 - over two months after the fact. Although Robinson admitted to the theft two days after the video which recorded the act was handed over to police, Len Doust, a special prosecutor assigned to the case on April 16, decided only yesterday that conviction was likely in the case. Thus, charges were laid and Robinson is scheduled to appear in BC Provincial Court in Richmond on July 8.

Interestingly, none of the newspapers which covered the charge today mentioned the fact that Robinson has repeatedly been in trouble with the law,and has already been convicted and jailed for a criminal offence. In 1994 he spent over a week in jail after being convicted of criminal contempt of court for defying an injunction against interfering with logging on Clayoquot Sound.

Robinson has also had other arrests and fines associated with his radical environmentalist activism. He narrowly escaped criminal charges in 1994 when he admitted to being at the death-bed of assisted suicide activist Sue Rodriguez. Robinson claimed that a BC doctor, whom he refused to identify, was present during the death of Rodrigues. Robinson also refused to say how Ms. Rodriguez died or whether it was the doctor who killed her and whether the MP participated in any way in a criminal assisted suicide. The NDP Member of Parliament has been a strong supporter of legalized assisted suicide.

On Parliament Hill on December 7, 1999, Robinson seized a sign on which were written quotes from Catholic teaching on homosexuality. The sign was held by Catholic priest, Father Tony Van Hee, who protests outside Parliament on a daily basis. Mr. Robinson broke the sign and threw it over the wall, claiming it was "hateful," even though the sign merely quoted Catholic teachings. He was never charged in the incident.

The maximum penalty for theft over $5000 is 10 years in prison. However several papers suggested that sentences for "first-time offenders" are usually reduced to a conditional sentence.
