Canadian Internet Providers Bell and Rogers Refuse to Block Access to Child Porn Sites
TORONTO, June 22, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In response to an announcement by the UK's British Telecom that it is set to launch an anti-child-pornography initiative, some major Canadian internet providers have indicated they do not plan to initiate any actions to prevent their services from being used by child porn distributors and viewers. British Telecom said it will introduce Cleanfeed, a mechanism designed to block user access to known child pornography internet sites.
Mohammed Nakhooda, a spokesman for Canada's largest internet service provider, Bell Canada, told the Toronto Star that "It is a role and responsibility of law enforcement to monitor content on the Web." He said Bell would only restrict access to child pornography "when asked to do so by law enforcement."
Taanta Gupta, spokeswoman for Rogers, another major Canadian internet service provider, told the Toronto Star that Rogers has no plans to actively monitor and restrict customer access to child pornography sites but is willing to co-operate with police.
