US Archbishop Says Abortion Has to be the "first question" for Catholic Voters

ST. LOUIS, June 25, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Archbishop Raymond Burke of the St. Louis Diocese told a group of parish pro-life coordinators this week that Catholics must consider the stance of politicians on abortion when voting.

"This is a topic on which I have many things to say," he told the group with a smile at a conference hosted by the Archdiocesan Pro-Life Committee. "When we go to vote, we must take into consideration all of the stands politicians make. But procured abortion, that has to be our first question."

The Archbishop said he is often asked about other human life issues and their importance, such as the death penalty and euthanasia. "This is ridiculous," he said, noting that the Church does care deeply about other life issues. But unless the unborn are defended, "what is the point of the other issues?" he asked.
