UK Court Denies IVF Appeal: Woman's Frozen Embryonic Children Must Die
LONDON, June 25, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - A UK court has denied a woman's appeal to keep her frozen embryonic children. Natallie Evans underwent the in-vitro fertilization procedure with ex-boyfriend Howard Johnston in 2001, in anticipation of surgery for ovarian cancer that would render her infertile. Since parting company, Johnston withdrew his permission for her to bear their frozen children to term. In the UK, a male partner's consent is essential through all stages of the IVF process.
Last October, the British High Court ruled that Johnston's consent was paramount, and that the embryos should be destroyed.
The appeals court ordered the embryonic children destroyed, but the order has again been stayed pending a further appeal to the House of Lords.
