President Bush Intends to Continue Vocal Opposition to Homosexual 'Marriage'
Will oppose judges "who try to remake the culture of America by court order"
WASHINGTON, March 5, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - During a press conference with White House spokesman Scott McClellan Tuesday, an interesting exchange with a reporter revealed that President George Bush intends to continue his vocal opposition to homosexual 'marriage'.
McClellan was asked, "Now that the President has spoken out on a constitutional amendment, does he feel it serves no purpose to continue to speak out on it, even though it's a somewhat divisive issue, an emotional issue around the country -- is he going to remain fairly quiet about this issue, at least until it goes through the legislative process? Does he feel he's already out there, has stated his position, so that's sort of the end of it?"
McClellan responded, "No, he will continue to talk about it. He will continue to talk about it. This is an important debate for the American people to be involved in. And the President supporting the constitutional process allows the people's voice to be heard in this debate. It was the actions of a few activist judges and local officials that led the President to this decision. And the President is strongly committed to protecting the sanctity of marriage. I think the American people are strongly committed to protecting the sanctity of marriage, as well."
Not long after the exchange Bush delivered a speech in which he spoke again about preserving marriage and also about fighting toward a culture of life.
In remarks Thursday at the Santa Clara Convention Center for the Bush-Cheney 2004 Luncheon, Bush spoke of protecting marriage but also said, "We stand for a culture of life in which every person counts and every person matters. We will not stand for the treatment of any life as a commodity to be experimented upon or exploited or cloned."
Addressing judicial activism in an obvious reference to the recent court decisions on marriage, the President said, "We stand for the confirmation of judges who strictly and faithfully interpret the law. We will not stand for judges who undermine democracy by legislating from the bench or try to remake the culture of America by court order."
