Pro-Abortion Activist Accuses LifeSite of Misrepresenting Her, But We Have Tape

TORONTO, March 9, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Long-time pro-abortion activist Joyce Arthur recently complained to LifeSite about its March 4 report on her debate with pro-life activist Gillian Long. Arthur claimed LifeSite made two subjective comments and one factual error, saying the LifeSite report was done "without any regard for accuracy or fairness."

Arthur objected to LifeSite news calling the joint talks a debate, since she has a no-debate policy. To clarify, while Arthur did her best to pretend that Long was not present, the atmosphere of the two back to back presentations and the competing question period seemed very debate-like according to witnesses.

Arthur also claims she was warmly received by the students present but admits that "The afternoon audience was a degree more hostile to the pro-choice viewpoint, presumably because Ms. Long invited her friends and supporters, or perhaps because more anti-choice students chose to attend that session instead of the morning one."

However, the most serious charge from Arthur was that she was misquoted. She writes, "I did not say that 'unborn children are not alive until the mother decides so'. I said that a foetus becomes a person when the woman carrying it decides it does." Arthur continued, "I hope you can understand that the words "alive" and "person" do not mean the same thing. I won't burden you with the nuances, or with what my comment really meant in context, since it's probably beyond your comprehension and would serve no useful purpose."

Despite Ms. Arthurs protestations, a review of the digital recording of her talk reveals that she did indeed use the word "alive" rather than "person". Moreover, the recording reveals that Arthur made the statement using "alive" rather than "person" more than once.

Arthur concluded her note to LifeSiteNews.com, "I don't expect anything from you of course, since it has been proven to me over and over again, that truth and honesty are not Christian traits."
